Nepal's rhododendron bloom runs from roughly March to May, and it moves uphill as the season goes on. The lower forests flower first, in March, in the deep red of the tree rhododendron. By late April the colour has climbed past 3,000 metres and turned pink and white. At the treeline the small shrub species are still going into May and sometimes early June.
Lali gurans, the national flower
Lali gurans is Rhododendron arboreum, the tree rhododendron, and it is Nepal's national flower. At lower altitudes it grows into a proper tree — gnarled, dark-barked, twenty or thirty feet of it, with the flowers in dense heads at the ends of the branches. Several dozen rhododendron species grow in Nepal altogether, ranging from those trees down to knee-high shrubs at the treeline, and they occupy a broad band of hillside across the country.
The flowers are eaten as well as admired. Lali gurans petals are pickled, made into a sharp cordial, and chewed raw, and you will be offered all three in a hill village in April.
How the bloom moves up the hill
The useful thing to know is that there is no single week to aim at. The bloom is a moving front, and where you should be depends on when you can travel. As a rough rule, work from the altitude rather than the date.

A cold spring pushes the whole sequence back by a week or two and a warm one pulls it forward, so nobody can promise you a date. If the bloom is the reason for the trip, plan to walk uphill through April and you will meet it somewhere.
Where the forests are
Ghorepani, on the Poon Hill ridge above Pokhara, is the famous one and deserves the reputation — the trail runs through continuous rhododendron forest for hours. It is also the most crowded place in Nepal in April, which is worth knowing before you commit to it.
In the west the forests are quieter. Khaptad National Park holds rhododendron across its ridges between the open grassland patans, and the walk up from any of the entry points passes through it. The forested slopes around Rara carry it too, mixed with blue pine and spruce, and the reflection off the lake in late spring is the reason many people time a Rara trip for May rather than October. Further west again, the hill country of Bajhang and the approaches towards Api and Saipal have extensive rhododendron and almost no visitors at all.
What spring is like otherwise
Warmer than autumn at the same altitude, and hazier. The clear post-monsoon air is long gone by April, and mountain views are softer and often lost entirely by mid-morning as the valley haze rises. Afternoons can bring a thunderstorm. Against that, the days are long, the passes are open again after winter, and lodges that were shut have reopened.
