Jumla, Rara Lake, Sinja Valley, and Chandannath Temple in one realistic 10-day loop through the heart of Karnali Province.

Karnali Province holds some of Nepal's most significant and least-visited destinations within a single, connectable region. This 10-day itinerary links four of them into one realistic circuit, without requiring the extreme logistics of far-western districts like Humla or Bajura.

Day 1-2: Arrival in Jumla

Fly into Jumla, the historic former capital of the Khas Malla Kingdom. Spend the first two days acclimatizing, exploring the town, and visiting Chandannath Temple.

Day 3-4: Sinja Valley

Trek to Sinja Valley, the birthplace of the Nepali language, to see the Bhairabnath Temple and the ruins of the historic Khas Malla capital.

Day 5-7: Rara Lake

Continue on toward Rara Lake, Nepal's largest, for two to three days exploring the lakeshore, national park trails, and wildlife.

Day 8-9: Return to Jumla

Trek back to Jumla, with a buffer day built in given weather-dependent regional flights.

Day 10: Departure

Fly out from Jumla, ideally with a second buffer day in reserve.

Practical Notes

This circuit works best March-May or September-November. Flights within Karnali are small aircraft operating on visual flight rules, meaning delays for weather are common — never book a tight onward connection on the same day as a return flight from Jumla.

FAQ

Is 10 days enough for a Karnali circuit?

Yes, for Jumla, Sinja Valley, and Rara Lake combined — this is a realistic, connectable loop within Karnali Province.

Do I need a guide for this itinerary?

A local guide is recommended, particularly for the Sinja Valley and Rara Lake trekking sections.

What is the best season for this circuit?

March-May or September-November, for clearer trails and more reliable flight operations.

Why should I build in buffer days?

Karnali's small regional flights operate on visual flight rules and are frequently delayed by weather — a tight schedule risks missed onward connections.
