There is no petrol pump anywhere in Humla and no vehicle workshop between Simikot and Hilsa. Fuel is decanted from drums and jerry cans, often carrying sediment or cut with kerosene. Anyone driving here carries their own spares, filters every fill, and budgets consumption well above a flat-road figure.
Where the last real fuel is
The last pumps on this route are in the lowlands. Once the road turns north into Humla there is no forecourt, no receipt and no quality guarantee anywhere. Sarkegad at about 1,500 m is the first place in the district where fuel can be bought at all, and it comes out of plastic bottles and jerry cans at a clear mark-up over pump prices further south.
That mark-up is not opportunism. Somebody drove that fuel up a single-lane track that closes with the weather, and the price reflects the journey. What is worth arguing about is not the rate but what is in the container.
Past Sarkegad the supply gets thinner and less reliable with every stage. In monsoon 2026 what we bought north of there smelled of kerosene when it was poured, and sediment in the bottom of a jerry can was normal rather than exceptional. Neither is a scandal in a district supplied this way. Both are your problem once the engine is running.
Filtering what you buy
Carry a fine-mesh filter funnel and use it on every single fill, including the ones that look clean. This is the cheapest and most useful item in the whole kit list and the one people leave behind.
Sediment is the obvious enemy and it blocks jets, filters and fuel taps. Water is the less obvious one, and in a district where fuel sits in open containers through a monsoon, water is always a candidate. Dilution with kerosene is the third, and it is the one you cannot filter out: it shows up as poor running, reduced power and pinking on a climb, usually at the point where stopping is least convenient.
The defensive measure against dilution is to buy in small amounts from more than one source when you can, so a bad batch is a nuisance rather than a tankful. Where that is not possible, which is most of the time, it is worth knowing what bad fuel feels like so you diagnose it as fuel rather than as a failing engine.
How much fuel to carry
Budget around 40 per cent above the consumption figure you would expect on tarmac. That is the working number from riding this corridor, and it comes from two causes that compound each other: low-gear crawling on loose surfaces, and thin air at altitude reducing what an engine can do with the fuel it gets.
Then add the reserve you have not counted. The rule that matters on any spur off the main route, and particularly on the ground north of Simikot toward Nyalu La (Nyalu Lagna), is that you need enough fuel to get back from wherever you turn around, not enough to reach where you were aiming. Those are different numbers and confusing them is how vehicles get abandoned.

What actually breaks
Clutches first, because of what the terrain asks of them. Sustained low-gear work on steep loose ground with a loaded machine is the hardest thing you can do to a clutch, and the climb from Kharpunath to Simikot is exactly that for a long time.
Chains and sprockets second. Grit gets into everything and water washes lubricant out, and a chain that would last a season at home will not.
Tyres third, and constantly. The surface is loose stone with sharp edges, and the sidewall damage is as common as the puncture. Heavy-duty tubes are worth the weight, and so is knowing how to change one on the side of a track without help.
After that it is the small stuff: cables, bulbs, fasteners shaken loose, anything with a bearing that has been through several days of water. None of it is dramatic. All of it strands you if the spare is not in your own luggage.
There is no mechanic
Between Simikot and Hilsa there is no motorcycle or four-wheel-drive workshop of any kind. Village workshops down the corridor, at Srinagar and similar places, can weld a farm tool and will help, and that is genuinely useful for a bracket or a rack. It is not a service centre and there is no parts stock.
The practical consequence is that your repair capability is what you carry plus what you know. Anyone who cannot change a tube, adjust a chain, clean a carburettor or free a stuck cable should think seriously about whether this is the right route, because those are the failures that happen and there is nobody to hand them to.
Recovery is the same story. There is no truck that will come and get you. A vehicle that cannot be made to move is a vehicle that stays where it is until somebody organises an expensive and slow retrieval, which is why abandoning a bike in a snowbank above 4,500 m is a real consequence rather than a rhetorical one.
Money, and the other supply problem
Carry cash, in small notes, and more than you expect to need. Everything north of the lowlands is a cash economy, there is no reliable way to draw money on a foreign card anywhere in Humla, and change for a large note is genuinely scarce. Fuel, food, beds and any help you need are all paid for in rupees from your own pocket.
Food and cooking fuel follow the same rule as everything else: buy at Sarkegad while there are shops, because the range thins fast and above the villages there is nothing at all. Preparing the vehicle before you leave the lowlands
Everything that is marginal at home will fail here, and the last place to deal with it is the last place with a workshop. Sort the vehicle in the lowlands, not in Sarkegad and certainly not in Simikot.
The specific items are the ones the terrain punishes. Tyres with real tread and no sidewall damage. A chain and sprockets with life left rather than life remaining. Brake pads replaced rather than assessed. Clutch condition checked properly, because the climb to Simikot is the hardest sustained work a clutch will ever do. Fluids changed, and a spare litre of oil carried.
Then check the things that only matter when something goes wrong: that the toolkit actually fits the fasteners on your machine, that you can get the wheels off with what you are carrying, and that the spare tube is the right size. Discovering otherwise on a cliff shelf is a long afternoon.
Tools worth their weight
The kit is small and it is specific. Tyre irons and a pump or compressor, because punctures are a certainty. A socket and spanner set that matches the machine rather than a generic roll. Pliers, a decent multi-tool, and wire. Cable ties in more quantity than seems sensible.
Two-part epoxy handles the failures that would otherwise end a trip: a cracked case, a broken bracket, a split housing. It is a limp-home repair rather than a fix, and limping home is the whole objective.
Beyond the vehicle, carry the things that make a night out survivable. A shelter of some kind, dry insulation sealed away from everything else, and food for longer than the plan. When something breaks on the road
Stop somewhere safe first. That means not under an active slope, not on a blind bend of a single-lane shelf, and not in a stream bed. A breakdown in a bad position becomes a second problem quickly.
Then work out whether you are fixing it or moving it. A machine that can be made to run badly is worth more than a machine that is being repaired properly, because the objective is to reach a settlement rather than to restore the vehicle.
If it cannot be moved, it stays, for the reasons set out above. That is the calculation to have made before riding onto ground like the approach to Nyalu La, and it is why turning around early is a technique rather than a failure.

Carrying spare fuel
You will be carrying fuel, and how you carry it is worth thinking about before you are doing it on a cliff shelf.
Proper fuel cans rather than bottles, mounted low and secured properly, and not in a position where a fall puts them under the vehicle or against a hot exhaust. Vented containers deal with the pressure changes that come with a two-thousand-metre altitude gain in a day, which is a real effect and produces a mess in a bag when it is ignored.
Keep it separate from food and from anything you sleep in. Fuel taints everything it touches and a jerry can that has leaked into soft luggage is a problem for the rest of the trip.
Before you travel. Humla is a restricted border district and conditions change without notice. Roads close, flights are cancelled, permit rules and fees are revised, and the Hilsa crossing opens and shuts to different categories of traveller. Confirm the current position with the District Administration Office in Simikot, the Department of Immigration, or a registered local operator before you commit to a route.
