The Himalayan giant honeybee builds a single open comb on the underside of a cliff, and villagers harvest it by lowering rope ladders from the top. The spring honey carries grayanotoxins from rhododendron nectar, which makes it mildly psychoactive and, in any quantity, genuinely poisonous. Both halves of that sentence matter.
The bee
Apis laboriosa is the largest honeybee in the world and it does not live in a hive. It hangs one enormous comb from an overhang, usually on a shaded cliff, high enough that nothing can climb to it. Colonies move seasonally, up the hill in summer and down in winter, and the same cliffs are used year after year. That predictability is what makes harvesting them a village institution rather than a matter of luck.

How the harvest is done
A team goes to the clifftop with a ladder of bamboo and cane, anchors it and lowers it over the edge. A fire of green leaves is lit at the foot of the cliff so smoke rises across the comb and drives most of the bees off it. One person goes down the ladder, works the comb loose with a long pole, and steers the falling sections into a basket that the rest of the team raises and lowers on ropes.
It is done on a swinging ladder, in the open, above a drop, inside a cloud of angry bees, with a pole in both hands. Ladders fail and people are killed doing this. The teams are usually Gurung or Magar in the Annapurna foothill districts, though cliff harvesting is practised right along the mid-hills including the western districts, and the rights to particular cliffs belong to specific villages and are allocated by the community.

Why the spring honey is different
Rhododendron flowers heavily in the Nepali hills in spring, and several species produce nectar containing grayanotoxins. Bees working high rhododendron forest concentrate it in the comb. The autumn harvest, taken from mixed late-season forage, is ordinary honey. The spring harvest from the high combs is the one sold as mad honey, and it is reddish, sharp and slightly bitter rather than sweet.
The toxin acts on sodium channels in nerve and heart muscle. In a very small amount that produces a warm, tingling, light-headed effect, which is what it has traditionally been used for and what it is now marketed for. Past that it produces vomiting, sweating, blurred vision, a dangerously slow heart rate and a fall in blood pressure that puts people on the floor.
The honest warning
This is not a recommendation and should not be read as one. Grayanotoxin poisoning is a recognised clinical presentation, well documented from Nepal and from the Black Sea coast of Turkey where the same honey is produced. Patients arrive at hospital with a slow heart rate and low blood pressure and are treated with fluids and, where needed, atropine. Most recover within a day. Deaths are rare but they are not unknown.
Three things make it more dangerous than the marketing suggests. Toxin concentration varies enormously between combs, seasons and rhododendron species, so no amount is a reliable dose. Onset can be delayed by a couple of hours, so people take more while waiting for something to happen. And anyone with a heart condition, anyone on cardiac or blood-pressure medication, anyone pregnant, and children face materially greater risk from a dose that would merely make somebody else uncomfortable. If symptoms appear after eating it, treat it as a medical emergency and get to a clinic rather than waiting it out.
What the tourist trade has done to it
Demand from outside has pushed the price up sharply, with the effects you would expect. Cliffs get harvested more often than the traditional schedule allowed, sometimes twice in a season, which does not give the colony time to rebuild. Some cliffs have moved from village control to contractors. Colony numbers are reported to be falling in parts of the range, and a good deal of what is sold in Kathmandu and online as mad honey is ordinary honey, or diluted.
If you want to see a harvest, be clear about what it is: a working day for a village, carried out at real risk, and increasingly staged for cameras where money is offered. Travelling slowly enough to be invited gets better results than a day trip does.
Where and when
The cliff belt runs along the mid-hills, with the best-known harvesting villages in Kaski and the neighbouring districts in and around the Annapurna Conservation Area. Spring harvests fall around the rhododendron bloom, roughly March to May depending on altitude, and autumn harvests around October and November.
