Why Visit the Mugu Karnali Highlands
Mugu district is best known internationally for Rara Lake, but the district extends far beyond it — remote highland villages, the Kanjiroba Himal massif on its border with Dolpa, and the upper reaches of the Karnali River system, Nepal's longest river. For travelers who have already done Rara, or who want a deeper, longer highland trek, Mugu's wider terrain is genuinely wild and largely undocumented.

May–October, avoiding the heaviest winter snow at altitude.
Difficulty & What to Expect
This is a Challenging trek requiring several days beyond the standard Rara Lake route, a local guide, and full trekking self-sufficiency — infrastructure thins out quickly past Gamgadhi, the district headquarters.

This region suits experienced trekkers who have already visited Rara Lake and want to go further into Karnali Province's highlands, and travelers drawn to remote river-source and mountain-frontier landscapes.
Suggested Itinerary
Day 1-2: Fly or trek to Gamgadhi, Mugu district headquarters.
Day 3-5: Trek into the highland villages toward the Kanjiroba border region.
Day 6: Highland viewpoint of the Karnali headwaters and Kanjiroba massif.
Day 7-8: Return trek to Gamgadhi.
