On a 3,000m alpine plateau in far-western Nepal, a scientist-turned-hermit spent decades in solitude. Khaptad National Park is now one of the Himalaya's most overlooked spiritual retreats.

Khaptad National Park sits on a wide alpine plateau at roughly 3,000m in far-western Nepal — a landscape of open meadows, temperate forest, and one of the country's most unusual spiritual stories. From 1930 until his death in 1996, a man known as Khaptad Swami, said to have been a scientist before renouncing the world, lived here in near-total solitude. His ashram still stands on the plateau, and it remains one of the most peaceful, least-visited spiritual sites in the Himalaya.

Who Was Khaptad Swami?

Local tradition holds that Khaptad Swami gave up a career in science to pursue a spiritual life, eventually settling permanently on the Khaptad plateau. Over decades of solitary practice, he became a revered figure across far-western Nepal, and his ashram is now a pilgrimage and meditation site for those who make the journey.

Why Khaptad Is More Than a National Park

Most travelers who have heard of Khaptad know it as a national park — and it is a remarkable one, with over 200 recorded bird species and extraordinary plant biodiversity, including meadows long used for Himalayan medicinal herb harvesting. But the ashram at its heart gives Khaptad a spiritual dimension that few of Nepal's protected areas share.

Getting to Khaptad

Khaptad is reached from Silgadhi in Doti district, via a 2-3 day trek, or by a short flight to Chainpur followed by a shorter walk in. Neither route is heavily trafficked, and that scarcity of infrastructure is part of what preserves the plateau's stillness.

Best Time to Visit

March through June and September through November offer the clearest weather and most comfortable trekking conditions on the plateau.

What a Visit Looks Like

Travelers typically spend one or two nights near the ashram, walking the open meadows, visiting the shrine, and — for those interested — sitting in quiet reflection in a setting built for exactly that. This is not a retreat with scheduled programs or amenities; it rewards travelers who come prepared for genuine solitude.
