Why Rara
Most travellers never make it to Rara. The journey alone — a small plane into the mountain airstrip at Talcha, then a two-day trek through Karnali forests — filters out all but the most determined. What they find is Nepal's largest lake, stretching 5 km across at nearly 3,000m, ringed by juniper and pine, without a single hotel on its shore.
The lake changes colour through the day: pale turquoise at dawn, deep cobalt by midday, copper at sunset. Rara National Park shelters red pandas, Himalayan black bears, grey wolves, and — rarely glimpsed — snow leopards crossing the ridge above the lake at night.
Getting There
Fly Kathmandu → Nepalgunj → Talcha (three legs, each on a small prop plane). From Talcha, most trekkers walk 2–3 days to the lake shore. A newer jeep track from Gamgadhi shaves a day if conditions allow. The West Nepal arranges permits, guesthouse bookings, and a local guide.
Best Time to Visit
October–November for clearest skies and autumn colour. March–April for rhododendron bloom. Avoid July–August. Winter is cold but snow-dusted and crowd-free.
