Dailekh & Khas Temples

All Destinations

Before the Gurkhas, before Prithvi Narayan Shah, there was the Khas Kingdom — and its most sacred site still stands in Dailekh. The Kakre Bihar temple complex is one of Nepal's least-visited and most historically significant wonders.

The Kingdom Before Nepal

Between the 12th and 14th centuries, the Khas Kingdom controlled much of what is now western Nepal, Uttarakhand, and parts of Tibet. At its height it was one of the most powerful states in the Himalayan region. Then it fragmented, was absorbed, and was largely forgotten — except in Dailekh, where the temples remain.

The Kakre Bihar complex is the most significant survivor. Carved stone temples rise from the forested hillside, inscriptions in archaic Devanagari still legible on the pillars. Priests tend the shrines daily. Local pilgrims arrive for festivals that have continued without interruption since the Khas era. The difference from the famous sites of Kathmandu Valley is the silence — almost no foreign visitors come here.

What You'll Find

Dailekh district is the heartland: a series of hilltop temple clusters overlooking the Karnali River gorge. Mahabu Hill is the most accessible, reachable by a short hike from Dailekh bazaar. Kalika Temple draws large crowds during Navaratri. Nearby hot springs at Tatopani offer a natural end to a day of temple walking.

This is living heritage, not a museum — the festivals, the offerings, the language (a Khas dialect directly ancestral to modern Nepali) all remain active. A local guide unlocks stories the signboards do not tell.

Getting There

Fly Kathmandu → Surkhet, then drive 3–4 hours north to Dailekh bazaar. The West Nepal arranges the cultural guide and temple access where permits are needed.

Best Time to Visit

October–April. Navaratri (September/October) is the best time for the full festival atmosphere.
